Meditation Upon Awakening
from “Things I’m Thinking”
What the dream means is what it intends. To wonder about what it might mean is to explore the realm of the mind that reaches beyond conscious opinions and beliefs to consider the larger possibilities of the self. This, ultimately, is healing— becoming whole. Parts of the self open revealing more within, each opening again to reveal several more within in an unlimited cascade of asymmetrical fractals.
I want to know what my unconscious knows, like an intrepid explorer setting foot in Terra Incognita— the unknown regions of the mind. The danger lies in my having an agenda about what will be found, distorting what is there according to my expectations and intentions.
The Pope once authorized claims over lands and people “discovered” in the New World as available for conquest, colonization, and conversion. We still suffer from this ignorance in order to satisfy the desires that we bring with us. To recover from that addiction, and to recover who it is we truly are, those desires must be disappointed, and we must be surprised to find an appetite for new foods now made available. Then, we are nourished.
